A potent vasodilator found in normal tissues and blood. Activates nitric oxide synthase.

A potent vasodilator found in normal tissues and blood. Formed by the decarboxylation of L-histidine. Activates nitric oxide synthase (NOS), resulting in the release of nitric oxide. Activation of histamine H₁ receptors leads to Ca²⁺ mobilization; whereas, histamine H₂ receptor activation stimulates adenylate cyclase activity in neurons. Inhibits the synthesis of IL-2 and γ-IFN in peripheral blood mononuclear cells and lipopolysaccharide-induced synthesis of TNF-α in monocytes via H₂ receptor activation.
