General description
A fluorescent false neurotransmitter that acts as an optical tracer that inhibits serotonin binding to VMAT2-containing membranes (IC50 = 1 µM). Compound has been used to assess the functional status of TH positive neurons by fluorescent measurement of uptatke and release.

The nervous system transmits signals between neurons via neurotransmitter release during synaptic vesicle fusion. In order to observe neurotransmitter uptake and release from individual presynaptic terminals directly, we designed fluorescent false neurotransmitters as substrates for the synaptic vesicle monoamine transporter.

Neurotransmitters have been thought to be fixed throughout life, but whether sensory stimuli alter behaviorally relevant transmitter expression in the mature brain is unknown. We found that populations of interneurons in the adult rat hypothalamus switched between dopamine and somatostatin
