General description

A cell-permeable, stable benzimidazolylpropanehydrazone that acts as a potent bacteriostatic agent and reduces the growth rate and transmembrane potential of bacterial cells without altering their membrane permeability. Blocks bacterial cell division by disturbing divisome assembly and causing dissociation of late division proteins from the divisome (MIC = 3, 5, 12.5, and 12.5 µM against V. cholerae, C. crescentus CB15N strain and JW5503 and YJE24 strains of E. coli, respectively). Also shown to reduce peptidoglycan remodeling and arrest the constriction in dividing cells. Does neither affect the tubulin homologue, FtsZ, nor interfere with replication, partitioning, and orientation of chromosomes. Exhibits low toxicity in mammalian cells.
