General description

A cell-permeable, nontoxic benzoyl-nitrophenylpiperazine compound with anti-fungal properties. Prevents the adhesion of multiple pathogenic Candida species to polystyrene surfaces and human cells (IC50 = 3 µM in A549 cells). Does not affect the viability of human cells even at high concentrations (~250 µM). Also effective, but to slightly lower extent, when added to cells following their adhesion. Keeps cells dispersed in the media and blocks the formation of hyphae (~2.5 µM). Also reported to block the transcriptional induction of the HWP1 promoter and is believed to act downstream of Efg1 transcription factor. Exhibits antifungal activity in a nematode model (C. elegans) and increases the life span of Candida infected worms. Also reported to alter biofilm morphology in a murine model of vulvovaginal candidiasis.
