General description

Interferon regulatory factor 8 (IRF-8) is also known as interferon consensus sequence-binding protein. Interferon regulatory factors (IRFs) comprise a family of transcription factors that function with the Jak/Stat pathway to regulate interferon (IFN) and IFN-inducible gene expression in response to viral infection. IRF-8 specifically binds to the upstream regulatory region of type I IFN and IFN-inducible MHC class I genes at the interferon consensus sequence (ICS). IRF-8 has a negative regulatory function in immune cells, can be induced by IFNG/ IFN-gamma and is involved in CD8+ dendritic cell differentiation. IRF-8 is predominantly expressed in lymphoid tissues. IRF-8 is implicated in MS.
