General description

Enterococci 100 medium is designed for the selective detection of enterococci and D-streptococci, which are key indicators of fecal contamination. The medium contains sodium azide, which suppresses the growth of many accompanying microorganisms, particularly Gram-negative bacteria, while allowing enterococci to grow. It also includes the chromogenic substrate X-GLU (5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl-ß-D-glucopyranoside). This substrate is cleaved by ß-D-glucosidase, an enzyme characteristic of enterococci, resulting in an intense blue-green color. This color change provides a clear visual indication of the presence of enterococci and D-streptococci.

Application

Enterococci 100 medium is used for the detection and confirmation of enterococci and D-streptococci in water samples. It is particularly used in food and beverage testing for assessing fecal contamination in drinking water, process water, environmental water, and other water sources where microbiological quality must be monitored. The selective and chromogenic properties of the medium support rapid, easy-to-read results and help reduce false positives from other ß-D-glucosidase-positive bacteria.
