Design for Sustainability
Our Approach
Design for Sustainability is our product design approach that keeps sustainability at the forefront of each stage of the product life cycle. During product development, we use our Design for Sustainability framework to target and track product sustainability when developing new products and improving existing products.
Design for Sustainability also enables us to re-engineer existing devices and instruments by targeting key impact areas and quantifying sustainability improvements. To re-engineer chemicals, use our industry-first DOZN™ Quantitative Green Chemistry Evaluator. DOZN™ operationalizes the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry and identifies areas to improve the sustainability of the product.
Design for Sustainability: How our process works
- We embed sustainability into our product development process with Design for Sustainability. The framework allows innovation teams to identify key impact areas across the product life cycle, set sustainability targets, and quantify sustainability characteristics of the new product.
- Products are evaluated against our product sustainability criteria, which are prioritized depending on the product type, and we identify potential trade-offs between improvements or degradations.
- New products that demonstrate significant sustainability characteristics receive a DfS scorecard, which transparently communicates the sustainability characteristics across seven impact categories directly on the product’s page.
Our DfS Scorecard: Founded Upon our Seven Impact Categories
Our DfS scorecard quantifies sustainability improvements in our products. We evaluate products against our product sustainability criteria that cover the main sources of impact on human health and the environment, grouped in seven impact categories. Assessed through a standalone characteristic or through a comparison with a baseline product, they form the basis for assessing the sustainability characteristics of our new products.
