General description
trans-Zeatin contains a hydroxylated isoprenoid side chain.
Application
trans-Zeatin has been used:
- as a media supplement for the isolation and culture of pretransitional and transitional embryos
- as a culture media supplement for incubating alginate strip culture
- as a growth regulator in modified basal Murashige and Skoog medium
Biochem/physiol Actions
trans-Zeatin is a plant cytokinin
Zeatin upon reduction forms zeatin O-glucoside, which is widely present in plants. It possesses transportation and storage functions, along with defence against zeatin oxidases.

Cytokinins (CKs) are plant hormones affecting numerous developmental processes. Zeatin and its derivatives are the most important group of isoprenoid CKs. Zeatin occurs as two isomers: while trans-zeatin (transZ) was found to be a bioactive substance, cis-zeatin (cisZ) was reported
