General description
α-Tocopherol acetate is a semisynthetic acetate ester of naturally occurring α-tocopherol.
Application
(+)-α-Tocopherol acetate has been used:
- as a supplement in the human embryonic kidney cells (HEK 293) to assess its impact on cell growth
- as a component of Dulbecco′s Modified Eagle Medium/Nutrient Mixture F-12 (DMEM/F12) for immortalized chondrocyte cell line
- as a component of serum-free medium for human colon tissue organ culture
- to test its antioxidant effects on cow articular chondrocytes
Use in insect cell culture applications as an antioxidant.
Biochem/physiol Actions
α-Tocopherol acetate or vitamin E-acetate has antioxidant properties and reduces lipid peroxidation. However, vitamin E acetate on pyrolysis leads to the generation of carcinogens like alkenes and benzenes.
Disclaimer
Since the M.P. is about 25 °C this preparation is usually an oil. Does not air oxidize.

We have recently shown that a multi-mineral extract from the marine red algae, Lithothamnion calcareum, suppresses colon polyp formation and inflammation in mice. In the present study, we used intact human colon tissue in organ culture to compare responses initiated

Normal and neoplastic human colon tissue obtained at surgery was used to establish conditions for organ culture. Optimal conditions included an atmosphere of 5% CO2 and 95% O2; tissue partially submerged with mucosa at the gas interface; and serum-free medium
