General description
CARM1 (coactivator-associated arginine methyltransferase 1) is an arginine N-methyltransferase that catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group from S-adenosyl-L-methionine to arginine residues within proteins. CARM1 targets include methylation of histone H3 at Arg17 and p300 at Arg2142. CARM1 is recruited to promoters upon gene activation together with histone acetyltransferases from the p300 and p160 families. During monocyte inflammatory stimulation, CARM1 acts together with p300 as a coactivator for NF-kB. It is responsible for moving cells toward the inner cell mass in developing blastocysts. CARM1 also plays an important role in androgen receptors and may play a role in prostate cancer progression.

It has been generally accepted that the mammalian embryo starts its development with all cells identical, and only when inside and outside cells form do differences between cells first emerge. However, recent findings show that cells in the mouse embryo

Coactivator-associated arginine methyltransferase 1 (CARM1) is a transcriptional coactivator of the androgen receptor (AR). It is involved in the regulation of the biologic functions of the AR. It remains to be determined whether CARM1 is involved in prostatic carcinogenesis. The

The p160 family of coactivators, SRC-1, GRIP1/TIF2, and p/CIP, mediate transcriptional activation by nuclear hormone receptors. Coactivator-associated arginine methyltransferase 1 (CARM1), a previously unidentified protein that binds to the carboxyl-terminal region of p160 coactivators, enhanced transcriptional activation by nuclear receptors

Cell plasticity or potency is necessary for the formation of multiple cell types. The mechanisms underlying this plasticity are largely unknown. Preimplantation mouse embryos undergo drastic changes in cellular potency, starting with the totipotent zygote through to the formation of

Activation of the retinoic acid (RA) signaling pathway is important for controlling embryonic stem cell differentiation and development. Modulation of this pathway occurs through the recruitment of different epigenetic regulators at the retinoic acid receptors (RARs) located at RA-responsive elements
