General description

Aquivion® N+ 125D/251.612 is a next-generation ionomer dispersion developed using perfluorosulfonic acid polymer technology. With a nominal equivalent weight of 790 g/eq and an ion exchange capacity around 1.25 meq/g, this product is formulated as a 25 wt% dispersion in water. The material is provided in the acidic form (-SO3H) and engineered for optimal proton conductivity, combining its high concentration of sulfonic acid functional groups with an exceptionally pure (>99% water) solvent system free of ethers. Manufactured using Syensqo’s advanced Short Side Chain (SSC) copolymer of Tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) and Sulfonyl Fluoride Vinyl Ether (SFVE), this dispersion offers enhanced crystallinity, improved mechanical performance, and superior conductivity compared to conventional Long Side Chain alternatives. Importantly, Aquivion® N+ is produced without fluorinated processing aids, reflecting a commitment to sustainable manufacturing and environmental stewardship. Aquivion® N+ 125D/251.612 will replace D79-25BS grade.

Application

Aquivion® N+ 125D/251.612 is ideally suited for high-performance energy applications. It is designed for the production of PEM fuel cell electrodes and catalyst inks, where reliable proton or ion conductivity is critical. The ionomer serves as a key component in the fabrication of PEM electrolyzer electrodes and separator membranes for redox flow batteries (RFBs), ensuring efficient performance even in challenging operating conditions. Additionally, its excellent water retention properties and high softening point benefit applications requiring stable operation at elevated temperatures and under low-humidity conditions. With its innovative and sustainable formulation, Aquivion® N+ provides a robust solution for advancing clean energy technologies and next-generation electrochemical devices.

Features and Benefits

  • High Proton Conductivity: Concentrated functional groups enable efficient ion exchange and enhanced fuel cell performance.
  • Superior Thermal Stability: High softening point supports operation at elevated temperatures above 80 ºC.
  • Strong Water Retention: N+ 125D-based catalyst inks achieve better fuel cell performance at low-humidity conditions
  • Fluorosurfactant-free Production of Fluoropolymers: aligning with more environmentally friendly production practices.
