General description

1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([EMIM][Ac]) is a water miscible, ecofriendly imidazolium ionic liquid. It shows good cellulose dissolution ability. Study on the influence of [EMIM]Ac on the growth of Clostridium sp. and Pseudomonas putida showed hormetic effect. Addition of inorganic salts has been reported to enhance its ionicity. The thermal stability of cellulose in [EMIM]Ac has been investigated.

Application

1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate is suitable for use as cellulose solvent in the homogeneous conversion of cellulose with acid chlorides, trityl chloride and tosyl chloride. It may be employed as solvent for the synthesis of copolymer of starch grafted with polystyrene (starch-g-PS) and environmentally friendly cellulose films.
