The compound is used in cancer research, especially in skeletal metastases and breast carcinoma. When entrapped in liposomes, it is used for macrophage-selective depletion (macrophage "suicide" technique), especially in spleen and liver. Found also to inhibit collagenase and matrix metalloproteinase1.
