Embedding Media: For Optimal Sectioning

Merck:/Freestyle/LE-Lab-Essentials/Microscopy/LE-histosec-533-800-09302015.jpgEmbedding is one of the most important steps in the processing of histological tissue. Media, such as paraffin wax, synthetic resins or gelatine, are used to achieve a defined hardness and homogeneity of the tissue, and enable uniform sectioning.

Merck’s portfolio of reagents for microscopy includes high-quality Histosec® embedding media. These selected paraffin waxes are enriched with polymers, and available with or without the entrainer DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide). Histosec media are produced under strict quality controls to ensure the absence of impurities for optimal embedding. Furthermore, all of our embedding media are CE certified IVDs. Hence, they are ideal for use in histological diagnostic laboratories.

Product Range

  • Selected paraffin: Histosec pastilles with or without DMSO
  • Gelatine: Kaiser’s glycerol

Histosec®

Histosec® is a special high-purity paraffin enriched with polymers for embedding histological specimens. The melting point of Histosec® is between 56 and 58 °C. Within this range, any specimen can be processed without structural damage, irrespective of the method used. Histosec® is available with and without DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide). DMSO increases the penetration rate of paraffin and further preserves tissue structures.
