Biochem/physiol Actions
VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) is a potent angiogenic cytokine. It stimulates proliferation and migration of endothelial cells. VEGF induces microvascular permeability by enhancing function of vesicular-vacuolar organelle (VVO). VEGF plays a prominent role in both normal and pathological angiogenesis. Substantial evidence suggests that VEGF is involved in the induction of tumor metastasis and intraocular neovascular syndromes. Increased expression of VEGF causes retinal angiogenesis, thus, inhibition of VEGF using soluble VEGF-receptor chimeric proteins can be considered as a potential therapy for ischemic retinal disease. Polymorphism in VEGF at C (-634) G is linked with diabetic retinopathy in type 2 diabetes. Altered expression of VEGF is also associated with rheumatoid arthritis, Graves′ disease, psoriasis, cardiovascular disease, and peripheral limb disease.

Mast cells (MCs) are present in the tumor stroma, and MCs that express the mast cell‑specific proteases tryptase and chymase (MCTC) exhibit several tumor‑related functions. It was previously reported that melanoma inhibitory activity (MIA) gene family members, including MIA, MIA2
A common polymorphism in the 5'-untranslated region of the VEGF gene is associated with diabetic retinopathy in type 2 diabetes.
