Actin, aortic smooth muscle（UniProt P62736）（別名：Alpha-actin-2、Cell growth-inhibiting gene 46 protein）は、ヒトACTA2（別名：AAT6、ACTSA、ACTVS、GIG46、MYMY5）遺伝子（Gene ID 59）によってコードされています。アクチンは、球状の多機能タンパク質で、細胞骨格マイクロフィラメントの基本的なビルディングブロックとして機能し、真核生物のタンパク質の中では最も保存されているものの1つです。6種類のアクチンがあり、骨格筋αアクチンACTA1遺伝子によりコードされており、同様に平滑筋αアクチンはACTA2遺伝子、細胞質βアクチンはACTB遺伝子、心筋αアクチンはACTC1遺伝子、細胞質γアクチンはACTG1遺伝子、そして平滑筋γアクチンはACTG2（別名： ACTA3）遺伝子によってコードされています。これらのアクチンは>90%の全体的な配列相同性を示しますが、アイソフォームは空間的、時間的、および組織特異的な発現パターンを示し、18個のN末端残基ではわずか50～60%の相同性が認められます。細胞質のβ アクチンと γアクチンは、すべての細胞に存在すると考えられていますが、その他4つのアクチンアイソフォームは通常、特定の種類の成熟筋肉組織に見られます。アクチンは、特定のイオン条件やリガンドタンパク質との相互作用に応じて、さまざまな構造状態で存在しています。アクチン分子がとるオリゴマーやポリマーの形は、それらが取る異なる立体構造に左右されます。

クローンASM-1（別名：anti-αsm-1、クローン1A4）は、ELISAおよびウェスタンブロッティングにより、大動脈アクチンと反応しますが、線維芽細胞（β- および γ-細胞質）、横紋筋（α-サルコメア）または心筋（α-心筋）由来のアクチンとは反応しません（Skalli, O., et al. (1986).J. Cell Biol. 103(6 Pt 2):2787-2796）。
