ヘモグロビンは赤血球の主要な構成要素であり、それらが赤色である要因です。赤血球中のその通常の濃度は34%です。ヘモグロビンは、肺から体組織へ酸素を輸送し、二酸化炭素の戻り輸送を促進する能力があるため、脊椎動物の最も重要な呼吸系タンパク質となっています。
