ドロスピレノンは第四世代のプロゲスチンであり、強力なプロゲストーゲン活性に加え、抗ミネラルコルチコイド活性や抗アンドロゲン活性を有しています。近年のドロスピレノンに関する二つの研究では、レボノルゲストレルと比べて静脈血栓塞栓症のリスクが倍増するとみられていますが、その他の研究で、別のリスクはほとんど認められていません。
