General description

Amyloid-like protein 1 or APLP-1 is neuronal, membrane bound specific protein that likely has a role in post-synaptic function but most research has focused on its proteolytic fragments such as ALID1 which acts as a transcriptional activator through binding the co-activator APBB1. APLP-1 fragments also interact with various G-protein coupled receptor pathways and appear to have a role in synaptic maturation during cortical development. APLP-1 also appears to regulate neurite outgrowth through binding to components of the ECM such as heparin and collagen I. Finally a special fragment called C30 is a potent enhancer of neuronal apoptosis and is a caspase specific cleavage fragment that works internally inducing apoptosis. Thus APLP-1 has roles in apoptosis, cell adhesion, endocytosis, cell signaling and neurite extension as well as some post-synaptic function as it is found clustered at post-synaptic densities in normal cells.
~72 kDa observed. A ~90kDa band may appear in some lysates due to glycosylation: Kim. TW., et al. (1995). Brain Res Mol Brain Res. 32(1):36-44.
