General description

SET domain bifurcated 2 (SETDB2), also known as Histone-lysine N-methyltransferase SETDB2 is a ubiquitous, nuclear protein belonging to the histone-lysine methyltransferase family and is comprised of a MBD (Methyl-CpG-binding) domain, a pre-SET domain, and a SET domain. Data suggests that SETDB2 is a methyltransferase with specific activity against histones. Studies also suggest that it may be a key regulatory component in the development of dorsal organizer and left-right asymmetry during early embryonic development by downregulating fibroblast growth factor 8. Although expression of the protein is considered ubiquitous, high levels have been reported in heart, ovary and testis tissues.
