Gene Information

human ... IL4(3565)

General description

The gene IL-4 (interleukin 4) is mapped to human chromosome 5q31.1. Human IL-4 is a 15kDa globular protein containing 130 amino acid residues. It is a cytokine which is mainly secreted by activated Th2 (T helper) cells.

Application

In inflamed porcine endometrium, IL-4 (interleukin 4)-human has been used to study effects of IL-4 on the leukotriene B4 and leukotriene C4 synthesis as well as secretion. It has been used to study the effect of IL-4 on synthesis and secretion of leukotrienes from endometrial epithelial cells of pigs.
IL-4 (interleukin 4) has been used to polarize the human monocytic leukemia (THP-1) cells to M2-like phenotype.

Biochem/physiol Actions

IL-4 (Interleukin 4) is a potent lymphoid cell growth factor that stimulates the growth and survivability of certain B cells and T cells. It exhibits anti-inflammatory responses and participates in immune processes by providing protection from intracellular pathogens. IL-4 also plays an important role in Th2 (T helper cells) differentiation. Additionally, it can suppress pro-inflammatory cytokines. IL-4 is associated with pemphigus. Also, mutation in the gene is linked with risk of dental implant loss. In children, IL-4 might be involved with risk of asthma and Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection.

Physical form

Sterile filtered and lyophilized with no additives.

Preparation Note

Centrifuge the vial prior to opening. Avoid freeze-thaw cycles.
Reconstitute in water to a concentration of 0.1-1.0 mg/mL. The solution can then be diluted into other aqueous buffers.
