Skin is the largest organ in the body, with such diverse functions as providing a mechanical barrier, thermoregulation, vitamin D synthesis, vitamin B folate protection, fluid homeostasis, sensation, and innate immunity. The skin responds to damage by upregulating repair mechanisms and causing skin cell hyperproliferation. Consequently, analysis of biochemical components from the stratum corneum (SC) can be used to evaluate skin irritation, SC integrity and structure and inflammatory changes in human skin.
