General description

Has been characterized as one of the most important tumor-specific antigens in individuals with malignant melanoma. Reported to disrupt mitochondrial transmembrane potential and induce apoptosis in tumor cells by a caspase-independent mechanism. Antibodies to GD3 can induce partial remission of tumor growth in animals and in humans via enhancement of cytotoxic and proliferative responses of lymphocytes. M.W. 1577.0 (based on tricosanoyl - 23:0).
