外用消毒薬である過酸化水素（H₂O₂）は、好気性細胞において好気性呼吸の副産物として合成されます。また、ペルオキシソーム、ミトコンドリア、あるいはその他の細胞コンパートメントにおける酵素反応の結果として産生されることもあります。

過酸化水素溶液は、次のように使用されています：:

• H₂O₂ 感受性アッセイ用に鼻腔上皮細胞を処理するため
• 老化を誘導するためにヒト不死化ケラチノサイト細胞株（HaCaT）とヒトメラノーマ細胞株（GCC19)を処理するため
• ブロモデオキシウリジン（BrdU）／NeuN染色のために脳切片を培養するため
• in vitro 実験用の神経幹細胞（NE-4C）を培養する細胞増殖アッセイにおいて

過酸化水素（H₂O₂）は、主に創傷洗浄に使用されます。酸化バーストと局所的酸素の産生により病原菌を殺すことができます。H₂O₂は、シグナル伝達分子や二次メッセンジャーとして機能します。遺伝子発現にさまざまな形で重要な役割を果たします。H₂O₂ は、炎症の調節に関与しています。
