General description
ブロモフェノールブルーはpH指示薬であり、強い青色を呈する色素です。 アガロースまたはポリアクリルアミドゲル電気泳動において、追跡用色素としてよく使用されます。 ブロモフェノールブルーはわずかに負電荷を帯びており、DNAと同じ方向に移動するため、使用者はゲルの中を移動する分子の進行を観察することができます。 移動速度はゲル組成によって異なります。

ブロモフェノールブルーナトリウム塩は、タンパク質試料をウェスタンブロッティング分析用に調製する際に用いられています。また、解剖時に消化管を見えやすくするために、ショウジョウバエの餌に使用されています。
