L-シスチンは、脳アストログリアを培養するためのアストログリア条件培地のサプリメントとして使用されています。HPLC-FD、UHPLC-UV、UHPLC-MS、トリプル四重極タンデム質量分析（UHPLC-MS/MS）などのいくつかの手法で使用され、シアノバクテリアの神経毒であるBMAA（β-N-メチルアミノ-L-アラニン）を他のジアミノ酸から識別します。
L-シスチンは、卵母細胞の成熟と胚発生の単為生殖を改善するために、卵母細胞培地のサプリメントとして使用されています。

Biochem/physiol Actions

シスチン尿症は、腎輸送およびL-シスチンの排泄を特徴としています。システインは、成長、生殖、維持および免疫に関連する機能性アミノ酸の1つです。システインはタンパク質中のジスルフィド結合の源であり、硫黄輸送に関連しています。生理学的pHでは、システインは急速に酸化されてシスチンを形成します。システインまたはシスチンの可用性の低下は、白血球の代謝に影響します。L-シスチンは、動脈平滑筋細胞による酸素産生とLDL（低密度リポタンパク質）の修飾に必要です。
