General description
Bovine serum albumin (BSA) is bound in a single chain cross-linked with 17 cysteine residues. It comprises three homologous, structurally different domains and two sub-domains each. This globular, α-helical, non-glycosylated protein is produced in the liver.
Application
Bovine Serum Albumin solution has been used:
- to study the effects of plasma protein on sulfated glycosaminoglycans (sGAGs)
- to histologically evaluate the implanted allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) alginate constructs
- as a component of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) to treat red blood cells (RBC) for sample preparation
Biochem/physiol Actions
Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) is the most widely used blocking agent in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). It is also the main constituent of cell culture media. BSA promotes the differentiation of human embryonic stem cells (hESC) differentiation and assists the circulation of drugs, hormones, and fatty acids.

The accumulation of platelets near the blood vessel wall or artificial surface is an important factor in the cascade of events responsible for coagulation and/or thrombosis. In small blood vessels and flow channels this phenomenon has been attributed to the

Bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have immunomodulatory and trophic capacities. For therapeutic application in local chronic inflammatory diseases, MSCs, preferably of allogeneic origin, have to retain immunomodulatory properties. This might be achieved by encapsulation of MSCs in a

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) are promising candidates for use as a biological therapeutic. Since locally injected MSC disappear within a few weeks, we hypothesize that efficacy of MSC can be enhanced by prolonging their presence. Previously, encapsulation in alginate was

Progressive accumulation of hyperphosphorylated tau is a hallmark of various neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer's disease. However, to date, the functional effects of tau pathology on brain network connectivity remain poorly understood. To directly interrogate the impact of tau pathology on
