Background InformationS100A9, also known as Calgranulin-B, Leukocyte L1 complex heavy chain, Migration inhibitory factor-related protein 14, MRP-14, p14, or S100 calcium-binding protein A9, and encoded by the gene S100A9/CAGB/MRP14/S100-A9 is a calcium and zinc binding protein that plays a prominent role in the regulation of inflammatory processes and immune responses. S100-A9 can induce neutrophil chemotaxis and adhesion. S100-A9 one of the subunits of Calprotectin, which is a complex of S100-A8 and S100-A9 proteins and is also critical for immune responses. S100-A9 is a cytoplasmic and secreted protein predominantly expressed in myeloid cells as well as neutrophils and monocytes but not expressed in lymphocytes. S100-A9 is found in high concentrations at sites of inflammation or in the serum of patients with inflammatory diseases. S100-A9 is also a cancer marker as it is up regulated in many cancers including gastric, esophageal, colon, breast and many more.
