General description
Potassium acetate (KAc) is an acetate salt of a weak acid and a strong base. It serves as a buffering agent, maintaining optimal pH levels for enzymatic reactions and protein studies. KAc compatibility with biological systems makes it a preferred choice for the isolation, purification, and analysis of biomolecules. Further, Its ability to stabilize enzymes and maintain optimal conditions in biological assays makes it indispensable in biochemical research. Furthermore, KAc is an excellent choice for chromatography and electrophoresis techniques, facilitating the separation and analysis of biomolecules.
Application
- Study on the Freeze-Thaw Resistance of Concrete Pavements in Seasonally Frozen Regions.: This study investigates the freeze-thaw resistance of concrete pavements in areas that experience seasonal freezing, emphasizing the role of chemical additives like potassium acetate in enhancing durability (Zhao et al., 2024).
- Harmonising IV Oxycodone with Paediatric Perioperative Medications: A Compatibility Study Through Y-Type Connectors.: This research explores the compatibility of IV oxycodone with various paediatric perioperative medications, including potassium acetate, to ensure safe administration (Youssef et al., 2024).
- Gene Expression of Ethanol and Acetate Metabolic Pathways in the Acinetobacter baumannii EmaSR Regulon.: This research examines the metabolic pathways of ethanol and acetate in Acinetobacter baumannii, highlighting the regulatory role of potassium acetate in gene expression (Huang et al., 2024).
Biochem/physiol Actions
Potassium acetate (KAc) buffer aids in the extraction of DNA from various samples including plants and ixodid ticks. It yields a good amount of DNA to test more markers and is highly recommended for use when many markers are to be tested on the same samples. KAc serves as an effective buffer system in chromatography and electrophoresis techniques, for the separation and analysis of biomolecules. In addition, it is also used as an activating agent to prepare activated carbon from waste tea for the adsorption of Acid Blue 25 (AB25) dye.
