General description
Sodium nitrate (chile salpeter) is a hygroscopic compound and soluble in water. It is primarily used as an oxidizing agent in organic synthesis. Additionally, sodium nitrate is used in the manufacture of glass and charcoal briquettes, and the synthesis of potassium compounds.
Application
Sodium nitrate is used:
- To modify hydroxyapatite to prepare heterogeneous catalyst (sodium nitrate/hydroxyapatite) for Claisen–Schmidt condensation process to synthesis of chalcones.
- In the direct acetoxylation of arenes under an anhydrous environment of TFA (trifluoroacetic acid), acetic acid, and acetic anhydride.
- As a redox mediator in the selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols in biphase electrolysis at ambient temperature.

To gain insight into how pathogens adapt to new hosts, Cryptococcus neoformans (H99W) was serially passaged in Galleria mellonella. The phenotypic characteristics of the passaged strain (P15) and H99W were evaluated. P15 grew faster in hemolymph than H99W, in vitro

There is an interest in controlling rumen methanogenesis as an opportunity to both decrease the emissions of greenhouse gases and improve the energy efficiency of rumen fermentation. However, the effects of inhibiting rumen methanogenesis on fermentation are incompletely understood even
