      Background InformationProtein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) is a family of ubiquitous heterotrimeric proteins that catalyze the removal of phosphate groups from serine and threonine residues. The PP2A enzymes contain core structural (A) and catalytic (C) subunits and variable regulatory B subunits. The B subunits regulate their catalytic activity, as well as dictate substrate specificity and subcellular localization. Recent studies have suggested that B56 epsilon subunits regulate p53-mediated apoptotic pathways, and can induce or suppress apoptosis depending on the cellular context. PP2A enzymes are also regulated by posttranslational modifications and endogenous inhibitors.
