      Background InformationLeo1, which is highly expressed in the nucleus of both skeletal muscle and heart tissues, as well in the placenta and liver, is one of four subunits that make up the PAF1/RNA polymerase II transcription. The PAF1/RNA polymerase II transcription complex has been shown to aid in the regulation of transcriptional elongation, histone methylation, and RNA processing. Deletion of Leo1 by itself leads to few obvious phenotypes. However, in combination with a PAF1 deletion, the additional deletion of the Leo1 protein suppresses several phenotypes which result from the defective PAF1 complex and a block in transcription. Conversely, when the Leo1 protein is overexpressed, it has also been shown to induce arrest of cell growth and the premature senescence of fibroblasts.
