General description

Efficacy of 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) solution as endodontic irrigant has been tested. It has been proposed as tissue solvent. Effect of time and storage conditions on tissue-dissolving capacity of various concentrations of NaOCl have been evaluated.
We are committed to bringing you Greener Alternative Products, which adhere to one or more of The 12 Principles of Green Chemistry. This product is considered as an environmentally benign oxidant and has been enhanced for "Safer Solvents and Auxiliaries". Click here for more information.

Application

Sodium hypochlorite is an oxidant used with catalytic TEMPO for oxidation of alcohols. It is generally used in the synthesis of sodium 3,3′-bis(sulfonato)-4,4′-bis(acetamido)azobenzene.

  5. What is the definition of available chlorine?

Available chlorine is a measure of the bleaching power of a substance. Available chlorine is defined as chlorine capable of releasing an equivalent amount of atomic oxygen according to the following reaction equations.Cl2 + 2OH- --> OCl- + Cl- + H2O  (eqn. 1) HOCl --> HCl + ½ O2  (eqn. 2)

  6. How is available chlorine tested?

To analyze for available chlorine, a sample of sodium hypochlorite is added to a solution of potassium iodide in the presence of acid to liberate iodine.  The liberated iodine is titrated with standardized sodium thiosulfate.
