Application

Fluorescein diacetate has been used for the differentiation of live cells from dead cells.

General description

Fluorescein diacetate (FDA) is a non-fluorescent molecule, which is hydrolysed to fluorescent fluorescein in live cells. Dead cells cannot accumulate or hydrolyse FDA.

    No. Only upon hydrolysis of the esters, catalyzed by cellular esterase, the lactone ring opens yielding fluorescein.  Only the fluorescein form is fluorescent.

    The maximum excitation wavelength is 490 nm and the maximum emission wavelength is 526 nm.

    This compound is used extensively for the staining of living cells.  It has been used as a viability stain for cultured neurons and plant ways, and in measuring of esterase and cholinesterase activity.     We have found that it is slightly soluble in water at 0.1%, and in ethanol at 0.3%. It is also soluble in dimethylformamide (DMF).
