Biochem/physiol Actions
Hormone polypeptidique à deux chaînes produite par les cellules β des îlots de Langerhans. Son poids moléculaire est d′environ 5 800 Da. Les chaînes α et β sont reliées par deux ponts disulfure interchaînes. La chaîne α contient un pont disulfure intrachaîne. L′insuline régule l′absorption, l′utilisation et le stockage par les cellules du glucose, des acides aminés et des acides gras et inhibe la dégradation du glycogène, des protéines et des graisses.
Abnormal insulin secretion or function leads to diabetes mellitus, obesity and other carbohydrate metabolism disorders. The biological effects of insulin are mediated by insulin receptor (glycoprotein) and it integrates major signaling pathways.

Application
Insulin from bovine pancreas has been used in endometrium cell culture. It has also been used to perform insulin tolerance test and to study the effect of protein undernutrition in laying hens.
Insulin from bovine pancreas was used during experimental design and treatments. Experimental animals (like cow) were infused with bovine insulin to decrease blood glucose to a constant level.

The insulin gene is mapped to human chromosome 11p15.5.
