Data access made easy

Smart Label with 2D Data Matrix GS1 Barcode

Accessing product-related data for different raw materials in your pharmaceutical production process can be a time-consuming task and a source for potential errors. With our new smart labels, we give your data processing efforts a helpful boost. Starting in November of 2017, our product labels for pharma raw and starting materials, as well as for filters, will feature a 2D Data Matrix GS1 barcode. These barcodes will provide seamless access to essential product information: Item Code, Batch Number, Shelf Life, and Global Trade Item Number (GTIN).

Features and benefits:

  • Direct access to product data encoded in the Global Standard One (GS1)
  • Easy data processing in a broad range of systems (e.g. EPR, LIMS, labware system, …) through Application Identifier Codes
  • Merck Scan Now Webpage provides access to additional product information such as CoAs, Safety Data Sheets and Specifications
  • Minimize scanning problems thanks to error correction coding of incorporated data

Frequently Asked Questions

On which product labels will the 2D barcodes be implemented and what is the time schedule for implementation?

First, we will implement the labels on our Emprove® Chemicals, followed by a continuous expansion to the entire Life Science product portfolio by the end of 2018 (with the exception of products with small labels).

Will the information on the 2D barcode be removed from the labels?

No, all information stored in the 2D barcode will stay 'human readable' on the labels.

Do you plan to put any other data on the 2D barcodes?

Yes, very likely and we will inform you soon after updates are made.

Do I need any special technical equipment to scan a 2D barcode?

Yes, please use a scanning device which is able to read Data Matrix 2D barcodes that adhere to the GS1 standard.

Important note - Do not confuse 1D Data Matrix GS1 barcode scanners with scanners able to read 2D Data Matrix GS1 barcodes.

Will 1D barcodes be removed from the label?

Not immediately. After internal and customer systems/processes have been updated, the 1D barcodes will likely be removed.

Are there any scanner configuration recommendations for the Scan Now page?

For best results, please set up your scanner to use an English keyboard layout.
