DescriptionRabbit polyclonal antibody supplied as undiluted serum. Recognizes the ~44 kDa BMI1 protein.
BackgroundBMI1 (accession no. P35226) is a ~44 kDa nuclear protein that is a member of the polycomb group proteins (PcG). BMI1 regulates self-renewal and proliferation of hematopoietic and neural stem cells partially through modulation of H2A ubiquitination, which leads to regulation of homeobox (Hox) gene expression. BMI1 has also been reported to play a role in cancer development. It is overexpressed in high-grade B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas, breast cancer, non small cell lung cancer, and colorectal cancer. Furthermore, downregulation of BMI1 in cancer cells leads to an upregulation of INK4A-ARF and an increase in apoptosis and delayed cell cycle progression. BMI1 is a potential target for cancer therapy, as well as a prognostic marker for myelodysplastic syndrome.
