DescriptionImmunoaffinity purified rabbit polyclonal antibody. Recognizes the ~150 kDa corin protein.
BackgroundCorin (Acc # NM-006587) is a 150 kDa protein and a member of the type II transmembrane serine protease family. The members of this protease family are grouped into four subfamilies consisting of hepsin/transmemebrane protease, serine (TMPRSS); matriptase; corin; and the human airway trypsin (HAT)/DESC subfamilies. Among these proteases, corin is the only one highly expressed in the heart where it plays a critical role in maintaining blood pressure. Corin has been identified as the atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) convertase. ANP is a 151 amino acid prepropeptide expressed in cardiomyocytes. Upon stimulation during high blood pressure, pro-ANP is proteolytically converted by corin to active ANP and released into the circulation. ANP activates its cell surface receptor and causes an increase of cellular cGMP concentration, which results in a lowering of blood pressure. Recently, single nucleotide polymorphisms have been identified in the human corin gene, which are associated with increased risk of hypertension and cardiac hypertrophy.
