      BackgroundHsp90α (GenBank target symbol = HSPCA, Accession number = NM_005348) is a heat shock protein involved in signal transduction, cell cycle progression, and apoptosis. The Hsp90α isoform, but not the Hsp90β isoform, is expressed extracellularly. Hsp90α has been reported to interact with MMP-2 and promote its activation, which may play a role in cancer cell invasiveness. Hsp90α transcription has been reported to be upregulated by interleukin-4 (IL-4). Native Hsp90α exists primarily as oligomers and frequently appears as a dimer on non-denaturing polyacrylamide gels.
