ブロモフォルムは、大気中に存在する臭素酸化物BrOx （Br+BrO）の主な有機源です。. 飲料水の塩素処理産物として形成されます。光解離してBr2断片を形成し、そのメカニズムはキャビティリングダウン吸収分光法により調べられています。
