カルニチンは4級アミンで、ほとんどの哺乳動物の組織で天然に見られます。カルニチンは骨格筋および心臓に比較的高濃度で存在し、そこでエネルギ-代謝の調節に関与します。カルニチンはグルコ-ス代謝を解糖からグリコ-ゲン貯蔵にシフトさせ、長鎖脂肪酸のミトコンドリアへの移送を促進します。長鎖脂肪酸はエネルギ-生成のためにミトコンドリア内で酸化されます。
カルニチンはリシンから生物的に合成されます。アミノ酸分岐鎖からのエネルギー生産を伴うかもしれません。
