General description

カラギーナンは、紅藻類の細胞壁に由来するムコ多糖類であり、二糖ユニットあたり1つ（κ-）、2つ（ι-）または3つ（λ-）の硫酸塩を有する1,3α-1,4β-ガラクタンから構成されるアニオン直鎖ポリマーです。イオン溶液では、κ-およびι-カラギーナンは自己会合してらせん構造となり、それぞれ硬質または軟質のゲルを形成します。λ-カラギーナンはらせんを形成せず、ゲル化しません。カラギーナンは商業的に増粘剤および安定剤として使用されています。

Application

カラギーナンは、マクロファージに対する選択的な細胞変性効果に関わると考えられている機構を通じて、in vivoおよびin vitroで免疫応答を抑制するために使用されます。ι-、κ-、およびλ-カラギーナンは硫酸化の程度が異なるため、保護活性、抗ウイルス活性、および免疫抑制活性の違いについて比較研究することができます。
マクロファージに及ぼす選択的な細胞変性効果に関与すると考えられる機序を介してin vivoおよびin vitroで免疫応答を抑制するために、カラギーナンが使用されます。ι-, κ-およびλ-カラギーナンは、硫酸化の程度が様々なので、防御活性、抗ウイルス活性および免疫抑制活性の違いが比較研究される場合があります。カラギーナンは、骨移植代替物、薬物送達用のバイオビーズやカプセル化担体などの封入容器など生体材料の開発に使用される場合があります。また、カラギーナンは、ヒドロゲルの開発に使用されます。
