セフォタキシムナトリウム塩は、抗生物質感受性試験（AST）法で試験抗生物質として使用されています。また、O. Tauri培養物から細菌を除去するために、抗生物質として使用されています。

Biochem/physiol Actions

セファロスポリン系抗生物質であるセフォタキシムは、グラム陰性菌とグラム陽性菌の両方に活性を示します。さらに、セフォタキシムはラン藻の分裂を阻害します。また、灰色藻の光合成オルガネラやコケ類の葉緑体など、下等植物のオルガネラ/色素体の分裂を阻害できます。
セフォタキシムは、細菌の細胞壁でのペプチドグリカン合成の最終的なペプチド転移段階を阻害するペニシリン結合タンパク質（PBP）に結合することにより、細菌の細胞壁合成を阻害します。結果として、細菌は細胞壁自己分解酵素により溶解します。
作用機序:細菌の細胞壁合成を阻害します。
