2-プロピルペンタン酸は短鎖脂肪酸であり、ヒストンデアセチラーゼ作用を阻害する可能性があります。また、腫瘍細胞の毒性を促進し、放射線照射に対する感受性を増加させることが知られています。2-プロピルペンタン酸は、脳内のγ-アミノ酪酸のレベルを上昇させます。2-プロピルペンタン酸の過剰投与では、中枢神経系の作用の低下が認められます。また、電位依存性ナトリウムチャネルを遮断することにより、γ-アミノ酪酸（GABA）の阻害作用を増強させます。
抗けいれん薬であり、双極性障害における気分安定剤としての効果も有しています。
