General description

過酸化水素は、水と酸素ガスに分離できるその能力が微生物学でよく使用されています。この反応は、多くの好気性および通性嫌気性細菌に存在するカタラーゼ酵素によって触媒されます。少量の過酸化水素を細菌培養物に添加することで、培養物にカタラーゼ活性が存在するかどうかが検出されます。カタラーゼが存在する場合、カタラーゼは過酸化水素の分解を触媒して酸素気泡の形成を引き起こします。この反応は、培養物の泡立ちとして目視により観察できます。気泡がなければ、培養物にカタラーゼが存在しないことになります。異なる菌種は異なるレベルのカタラーゼ活性を示すため、カタラーゼ試験は微生物の同定と分化によく用いられます。例えば、ブドウ球菌種は高レベルのカタラーゼ活性を示しますが、連鎖球菌は示しません。カタラーゼ試験は、酸素を副産物として発生させる（通常はカタラーゼ活性を示す）好気性細菌と、酸素を使用して酸素を副産物として発生させない（カタラーゼ活性を示す、または示さない場合がある）通性嫌気性細菌を鑑別するためにも使用されます。

Application
