閉経前に卵巣から分泌される主要なエストロゲンです。エストロゲンは、遺伝子転写によるタンパク合成を調節することにより、胚発生期や思春期におけるメス表現型の発達を誘導します。また、ゴナドトロピン産生を促すことにより排卵を誘発します。エストラジオールへの曝露は乳癌の発生率や増殖を増強します。
