Reliable & Convenient Testing for Microbial Contamination

Request Information

Merck’s membrane filtration and culture media solutions for bioburden testing deliver fast and reliable results when sampling municipal or environmental water for microbiological contamination.

The Standard Test Method for Microbial Contamination

Merck’s membrane filtration technique complies with international standards such as Standard Methods for Examination of Water and Waste Water, US EPA, and EU testing procedures for drinking water. It’s easy-to-do: the test sample is filtered through a microporous membrane, allowing any microbial contamination to be retained on top of the membrane. Residues that might inhibit the growth of microorganisms are removed by rinsing. After the sample has been filtered, nutrient medium is added to promote the growth of contained microorganisms.

Dehydrated Culture Media

Dehydrated Culture Media

Granulated media improve the reproducibility of results by avoiding the decomposition effects that can occur with powdered media. Merck media comply with the EDQM to minimize the risk of transmitting animal spongiform encephalopathy agents.

Ready-to-Use Culture Media

Ready-to-Use Culture Media

Merck provides a complete portfolio of ready-to-use (RTU) culture media for microbiological bioburden testing. Culture media based on Casein Soy Bean Digest or Sabouraud Dextrose are recommended for the microbial enumeration tests TAMC (total aerobic microbial count) and TYMC (total yeast/molds count). Specialized culture media are available for the detection of specified aerobic microorganisms.
