      DescriptionSynthetic zwitterionic detergents are also known as sulfobetaines. ZWITTERGENT® Detergents, unlike other surfactants, retain their zwitterionic character over a broad range. This property is attributed to the presence of a quaternary ammonium ion and a sulfonate ion of equal strength. This ionic balance presumably prevents the irreversible binding to either anionic or cationic compounds. Until recently, surfactants used in the solubilization of membrane proteins were either anionic (e.g., sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS) or non-ionic (e.g., alkylphenol ethoxylates, such as the TRITON®-X detergent series). Each of these two classes of detergents has drawbacks that are a consequence of their variable binding affinity to proteins. ZWITTERGENT® detergents offer an alternative to nonionic and anionic detergents for solubilizing membrane proteins and are available from octyl- to hexadecyl- forms.
