DescriptionPurified rabbit polyclonal antibody. Recognizes MMP-13.
BackgroundMMP-13 (~54 kDa), also known as collagenase-3, was originally identified in breast carcinomas but has since been shown to be present in high concentrations in other cancers, particularly in highly metastatic squamous-cell carcinomas of the head, neck, and vulva, in cutaneous basal-cell carcinomas, chondrosarcomas, melanomas, and in urinary bladder carcinomas. Expression of MMP-13 is not restricted to tumors and has been shown to also have a role in the repair of corneal wounding, and in the normal differentiation of osteoblasts. Mechanistically, MMP-13 appears to bind to a specific cell surface receptor and following interaction with the low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein is internalized by the target cell. Like other members of the MMP family, MMP-13 has multiple substrate specificities including type II collagen, cartilage, fibronectin, and aggrecan.
